The brutal assassination of President Diem and his brother Ngo Dinh Nhu
has been a stain of U.S diplomat history forever!
(Excerpt “VIETNAM WAR” The New Legion, Vinh Truong 2010)
I think it is enough for my historical humble contribution for those who want to study this recent history of a heroic nation which is too small to defense itself against foreign giant ferocious beast. This is a lesson for both superpower and underdeveloped countries for future struggles against common enemies. There was no winner but both losers in that history. I write this chapter for research and discussion as un-politic military officer with personal viewpoints. Many details in 11/1/1963 coup were discovered too late for next generations to get through. I also did not mention to the Second Republic in "New Legionnaire" which I was its new Legionnaire myself.
On "All Souls Day" 11/2 every year, not only Catholics but non-Catholic people like me, even someone with confused prejudices all over south VN must have praying for this great patriot who brutal death for defense of sovereignty of his nation and happiness for his people were confirmed by friends and foes. Even Henry C. Lodge in his memoir "The Storm Has Many Eyes" and the French, Diem's colonialist enemy all called him an "extreme nationalist". Except Diem, other North and South Vietnamese leaders were puppet subordinates of foreign powers. 7 million dead in the North and almost 1 million dead in the South have paid their own lives for these stupid unpatriotic leaders. Late President Diem sacrificed his own true moral celibacy and his life for "National and Vietnamese Just Cause". He humble refused luxury materialism and Lodge's offer for his physical safety courageously. He was not a hypocrite Ho Chi Minh whose controversial sexual life was systematically covered until the collapse of the Communism.
He was alone in the struggle to protect peace, prosperity, native culture, Oriental morality, stable society. He prevented in vain the disembarkation of foreign combat troops, the invasion of their culture and the conquest of their dollar. He resisted in vain to protection the sovereignty of Vietnam until death.
His talent brother Nhu, his official national advisor had concluded that "alliance with imperialist, how powerful it is whatsoever, is bringing the nation to no exit if there have been no approval, no support, no will from the people, not from the ally". Historians Ellen Hammer and Marilyn B. Young wrote that with Nhu at his side, Diem will never give the US permission to send combat troops to VN as Nhu's comment: "At least some US advisors must withdraw or all of them at last". Diem's strategic hamlet national policy was a success against Communism from Tuy Hoa, Bong Son, Tam Quan, Quang Ngai and Cuu Long river area, where people have had experiences with past Communist rules. Even CIA memorandum on 9/14/63 proved: "the military and political situations had declined sharply from present levels".
The puppet government of Dr Phan Huy Quat and his advisor Bui Diem was held responsibility on its permission of US combat troops entry to VN. Thieu's government became another puppet one which held accountability on the collapse of SVN beginning from abandoning 2nd Corps and transferring the government to a Communist sympathizer whose brother Duong Thanh Nhut has been a NVA high rank officer.
SVN under President Diem was a political model in Asia. Many prominent leaders and individuals became his personal friends such as Republic of China's Chiang Kai-shek, Republic of Korea's Lee Syngman, Philippinnes's Raymon Magsaysay, Gen. Vanuxem, writer Suzane Labin, Great Britain's Sir Thompson.
Unfortunately, some memoirs written in foreign languages by Nguyen Cao Ky, Tran Van Don, Bui Diem ... have just polished their personalities instead of proving SVN brighten just cause of anti-Communist stand to defense itself. Others memoirs written in native language of Ton That Dinh, Nguyen Chanh Thi, Do Mau, Vuong Van Dong, Pham Van Lieu ... have focused only on failures of their foes to defense themselves. By denying President Diem's patriotism and his unchallenged credits on SVN stand, they have only proven to their next generations that they were puppet subordinates of foreign superpowers and SVN had had absolutely no sovereignty under their rules.
Under their rules, people had been living under two rules: a corrupted puppet government in the daytime and a terrorist styled Vietcong government at night. They have had to pay taxes for both parallel rulers at a time.
Mourning or at least remembering our late patriotic courageous President Diem is a courteous and civilized style of our traditional morality. Has people in our fatherland been no freedom to having their own views on political issues, they have had no chance to express their appreciation to a one time peaceful SVN under his rule. Our overseas refugees all over the world do have full freedom taking our strength to defeat the dictatorship in VN and to rebuild our country; instead could not overcome our differences on anything. Former SVN officials and generals have blamed the US and each other for war lost.
In a TV talk show on 9/27/2004, Fox News anchor O'Reilly asked: "Had South Vietnamese people not fought for their freedom then having no freedom now?" President George W. Bush answered: "Yes". Bush acknowledgement of history had said what US was denying stand in its lost war forced him to do. In contrary, one US's "yes" vote had overcome 2/3 UN's "no" vote, included UN Secretary General in waging Iraq war 4 decades later. The US must deny its "deformed-fetus" to prevent a "Vietnam quagmire" wound long lasting in US dark history. The US systematically rewrites history under "Academic Freedom" program of WJC University in Massachusetts for that goal. “US would like to overcome the Vietnam abandonment syndrome”
Many anti-war icons and elites in VN war such as Jane Fonda, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, John Kerry ... after using their self-disgraced miserable tactic later made false apologizes or proving true regret like Pulitzer Award's Eddie Adams, who was paid for his famous picture of Gen. Loan's execution of a VC guerrilla on Tet 1968, at Loan's funeral with his comment: "The guy was a hero. American should be crying. I hate to see him go this way without people knowing anything about him". Very few American authors proved accurate accounts on their objective writings.
Writing for our next generations now is a crucial effort to proving our true history. As W Brayant had said: “Truth crushed to earth shall rise again! .Otherwise, it will be too late to tell our children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren that we, as their ancestor were not crooks, whores, pimps, cheese-hungers who fled our homeland for being slaves of Imperialist as anti-war activist and US media had drawn by their immoral writings and their lack of human conscientious.
In Permanent Government’s scope: “Thus, as the nine-year rule of President Diem came to a bloody end” If in the world don’t have the totalitarian Skull and Bones dynasty and the acting U.S government had kept their promises, Southern Vietnamese might now be enjoying prosperity and democracy similar to what has developed in South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand that it became very sure to me.
